In a sign of things to come, Indians in Dubai are increasingly turning to free matrimonial sites to find a marriage partner. While traditional matchmaking methods still exist, matrimonial sites have become a well established option for those in search of a bride or groom. Traditionally, many families used start their matrimonial search by placing ads in the Classified sections of newspapers. With the advent of matrimonial sites, this has changed and the first step is now to place an ad on a matrimonial site.
In the past few years, the paid matrimonial sites have been quite popular. Families place an ad on the matrimonial site and in order for them to contact potential brides or grooms, they have to pay a membership fee. In most cases the membership fee is quite steep and those seeking matrimonial alliances have been willing to pay the price of a membership, so far. This was mainly because there few other options. Now, however, those seeking marriage partners have a new option and this is the “Free Matrimonial Site”. How do “free matrimonial sites” work? The same way as paid matrimonial sites, with one important difference, free matrimonial sites do not charge a membership fee. Moreover, free matrimonial sites provide the exact same features as paid matrimonial sites. Indians in Dubai are discovering the advantages of registering with free matrimonial sites such as iRishta.com.
Thomas Varghese, a Sales Manager working in Dubai had his profile on two of the large, paid matrimonial sites. “Paying for a membership on two matrimonial sites was coming out to be quite expensive.” said, Mr. Varghese. “I have registered my profile on iRishta.com and am able to message potential brides and read their replies freely”, he said. “While I have not met my future marriage partner yet, I have had many responses to my matrimonial profile“, he continued.
Mr. Varghese is one of the many Indians in Dubai who has discovered the benefits of registering for a free matrimonial site. “I have nothing to lose”, said Manoj Bhatia a shop trader in Bur Dubai. “Matrimonial sites are becoming very expensive, I prefer a free matrimonial site”, he said.
The trend towards free matrimonial sites is poised to continue as more and more Indians in Dubai discover the benefits of using free matrimonial sites.

It has been more than two years since the Yale Centre For Globalization published a hard hitting report called “Dubai’ Kerala Connection“. The report highlights the plight of the hundreds of thousands of unskilled South Asian workers in Dubai, calling them the “foot soldiers of globalization”. According to the report, ” Blue-collar Indian workers in the UAE, including Dubai, amount to an exploited underclass with no rights, no unions, and no stake in country’s burgeoning wealth, say human rights groups.” An “exploited underclass”, those are harsh words indeed. In Saudi Arabia where there almost a million South Asian migrant workers, the situation is no better. Human Rights Watch says Indian migrants live in ” “conditions resembling slavery.“
Now, more than two years after that report, and numerous media reports later, have things changed? There seems to be some movement in the Dubai Government. A company owned by a member of the Dubai ruling family was fined. Something that would have been unheard of just a few years ago. BUT, the question still remains, is enough being done to improve the plight of Indians in Dubai? What is the Indian Community in Dubai DOING?! I think the answer is, “Not Enough!”. The complete report from Yale Centre is HERE.
We will continue to follow the plight of Indians in Dubai and report on it’s progress.
In a turn around of sorts, Dubai is slowly beginning to realize that Indians can have some real economic power. Dubai is an ideal tourist destination for Indians. With it’s close proximity, abundance of Indians, and best of all CHEAP SHOPPING, Dubai makes a great short haul destination for Indians looking for a vacation outside their own country. So far, Indians have been coming as tourists, even though the Dubai government has not made any real efforts to target Indian tourists. Dubai’s efforts have so far been focused on tourists from the West. But, Dubai is discovering that there is a gold mine in their backyard, i.e. India.
Carl Vaz, the director of Dubai Tourism in India has been charged with increasing the number of Indian tourists coming to Dubai. According to Carl Vaz, “An estimated 398,000 Indian tourists visit Dubai every year. And this figure is exclusive of the number of Indians who go there for employment purposes. But now we are aiming at making this number touch the 430,000 mark by the end of this year,‘
How do they plan to achieve an increase in the number of Indian tourists coming to Dubai? Well, the plan seems to be to target the second-tier cities. Carl Vaz says “To begin with, we are targeting the population of the tier 2 cities like Chandigarh, Nagpur and Coimbatore“.
The average price of a 3 day package for a couple is about Rs 50,000. This includes acommodation in a 4 star hotel, a ship cruise and a Dubai city tour. The intent is to increase the average stay from the 3 days to 7 days.
So, if you are a resident of cities like Chandigarh, Nagpur, Coimbatore etc. expect to see many promotions and offers that promote Dubai.
Ever day there are new stories about how Indians are mistreated in Dubai. There was a story in the Times of India about how dancers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who make up the majority of night club performers in some Dubai hotels are locked up in their flats at the end of their work shift. The situation was brought to light when a Pakistani dancer, Aaina was killed due to a fire in her apartment. She could not escape because she had been locked in her apartment. It appears that now as a result of this incident, their employers are no longer keeping Indian dancers locked up in their apartments at night.
Our question is, “Why does the Indian government allow such treatment of their nationals in Dubai?” The entire economy of the emirate of Dubai is dependent on labour from the Indian Subcontinent. Yet, the government of India only makes feeble attempts to protect mistreatment of it’s citizens in Dubai. Is it not time that Indians stood up for themselves?
We missed this little gem from a couple of months, but it looks like the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission has stopped BharatMatrimony.com from making any claims about their success rate in marriages. Why has the MRTPC come down so hard on BharatMatrimony.com? Well, it looks like in it’s desperation to compete with it’s rivals, the matrimonial site has taken to making unsubstantiated claims about it’s success in arranging marriages. What? Indian Matrimonial sites making false claims? It is impossible! How can such trustworthy companies be making false claims?! Well, not only is it possible, but it seems that false advertising and unsubstantiated claims are standard operating procedure for many of India’s leading matrimonial sites.
The claim itself was that BharatMatrimony.com has arranged eight times more marriages than it’s leading rival, Shaadi.com. Now, just looking at this claim, it in itself is ridiculous. There are no facts behind this statement and it looks like something that has just been pulled out of the air. The MRTPC seems to think so and thus their order to BharatMatrimony.com to stop making these claims. Are these the kinds of sites you can trust with providing you matrimonial services?

The Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) are to be held this weekend in Yorkshire in the UK. Bollywood’s hottest stars from Amitabh Bachan to Shilpa Shetty have started arriving in advance of the awards ceremony.
The IIFA is a scheduled to be a five day event. The main awards will be in Sheffield with events being held throughout Yorkshire. The event is expected to attract 28,000 visitors and will be broadcast in 110 countries with as estimated global audience of 500 Million people!
The stars of the Bollywood movie The Train, including Emraan Hashmi and Geeta Basra have even gone to the extent of scheduling a special train for the event that travelled from London to York. There is no mistaking that this is Bollywood’s biggest event of the year.
We will be watching the awards here at iRishta.com and be giving you our analysis on all the winners and losers.
Staying with the Shilpa Shetty story, winning Celebrity Big Brother, over all the racial allegations has catapulted her to celebrity status in the UK. So much so that her new film, Life in a.. Metro has premiered at Leicester Square in London’s theatre district. Leicester Square premieres are usually reserved for big budget movies like the James Bond series. Life in a.. Metro is the first Indian movie to premiere at Leicester Square.

Of course, all this is only possible as a result of Shilpa Shetty’s popularity as a celebrity in the UK. A Leicester Square premiere is a far cry from Shilpa Shetty’s court troubles at home.
It looks like the large, paid Indian Matrimonial sites are getting more desperate by the day. They have begun to resort to rather dubious research and surverys to tout their advantages over each other.
Cribb.in uncovers some of the false adverstising perpetuated by SimplyMarry.com. Apparently this site, a rebranded version of TimesMatri.com claims to be “India’s Most Popular User-Friendly Website”. After doing some research, this is what cribb.in has to say about SimplyMarry.com
“Bottom line, Simply Marry is NOT “India’s Most Popular User-Friendly website” It maybe among the most popular (however that is subject to verification) Secondly, anyone can write “Applauded as “The BEST Practiced” Matrimonial Website!” …. damn straight, i applaud every time a monkey performs a trick on the road. Simply means nothing!“
But, that is not where it ends. It gets even better. Shaadi.com is boasting of the exact same thing. How can two matrimonial websites be the most popular? His hilarious conclusion:
“Something is fishy here. How come 2 matrimonial websites are saying that they are India’s Most User-Friendly ? Something has to be wrong here. Anyways who am i kidding, this is India and most of the claims made my companies here are self proclaimed with no 3rd party verification. If at all there is a 3rd party verification its usually paid for. “
We have talked earlier about how Shaadi.com and JeevanSathi.com make false claims about being “free matrimonial websites”. This is more of the same.
As we have mentioned before, our members are coming to realize that these matrimonial websites and their hilarious claims have little basis in reality. Forget about SimplyMarry.com, because iRishta.com is SIMPLY FREE! And we don’t need to make exaggerated claims to bolster our credentials!
The latest coming in from the notorious Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty kissing incident is that the Supreme Court of India has stayed the “look out order” against Shilpa Shetty. The notice had directed police and airport authorities to apprehend Shilpa and prevent her from leaving India. It is good to see that some sense has prevailed in this case.
It is our opinion that this incident has been completely blown out of proportion. There are three different obscenity and indecent behaviour cases against her across the country. We have one question for the people filing obscenity charges in this case, “Have you seen some of the recent Bollywood movies?” This kiss comes nowhere near the level of tittilation and flesh that seem to have come into favour with Bollywood directors.
Does this deserve the type of media attention it is getting? The kiss is a little over-exuberant at best and culturally insensitive at worst. Richard Gere has apologized repeatedly for the incident. We think that this whole episode has played it’s course. The Supreme Court of India should vacate all the criminal cases in this incident. This is quickly becoming an embarassment for the whole country.
